If you live on Ramrod Key, your weekend fits inside about a half-mile of Overseas Highway. The reef you can drive to, the largest tiki bar in the Keys, the only mini golf course in the archipelago, and a backcountry charter that launches from a canal behind the bar all sit within a short walk of each other at Mile Marker 27. That density is the point of this island. Most Keys communities give you one anchor. Ramrod gives you the full arc of a Saturday without a car ride to Marathon or Key West.

Two properties. Four completely different weekends inside them. Everything below builds off that fact.
Saturday Morning on the Reef
Looe Key Reef is the reason most people found this island in the first place. The reef is a roughly 6-square-nautical-mile section of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, which contains the only coral barrier reef off the coast of the continental United States, and the only one accessible by car. If you already live here, that sentence is your Saturday morning. You are ten minutes from a dive site people fly across the country for.
Looe Key Dive Center runs two trips a day out to the sanctuary. Their boat is the Kokomo Cat II, a 45-foot Corinthian catamaran, and the shop has been the go-to charter on this stretch since the late seventies. If you have out-of-town guests coming in for a long weekend, the dive-then-tiki loop is the tightest one-stop pitch on the Lower Keys, and you never have to leave the property.

The Backcountry Between Breakfast and Lunch
Reef diving gets the postcards, but the flats behind Ramrod are the reason a lot of longtime residents bought here in the first place. Capt. Jim at Mile Marker 27 Fishing Charters runs backcountry trips for tarpon, bonefish, permit, shark, barracuda, snapper, sea trout, and more in two to eight feet of water. That depth matters. You are sight-fishing, not trolling. The visual experience is the trip.
The launch is worth mentioning by itself. The pickup is at the Looe Key Tiki Bar and Dive Shop parking lot, which is connected to a canal system leading directly into the backcountry flats. If your own canal happens to sit on the right side of Ramrod, this is a template for what your dock can do. If it doesn't, you now know where the closest half-day charter lives.
Fall through winter is the honest window for locals. Recent reports from the flats note that with cooler water temperatures the inshore seatrout bite has been on fire, with trophy fish in the 24 to 26 inch range being released and 15 to 19 inch fish going home for dinner. That is the kind of detail that separates a Tuesday afternoon on your skiff from an outing you build a weekend around.
When the Reef Turns Into a Concert Hall
The one weekend a year Ramrod cannot be quiet is Underwater Music Festival weekend. The 41st Annual Underwater Music Festival took place July 11 and 12, 2026, hosted by the Lower Keys Chamber of Commerce, combining music with a mission to promote eco-friendly diving practices and reef conservation.
What actually happens: for four hours on Saturday, special speakers hanging beneath boats beam music straight into the sea, ranging from Jimmy Buffett to The Beatles to Disney favorites, echoing through the reef's aquatic amphitheater. Costumed divers, faux instruments, mermaids. It is genuinely one of the more surreal traditions in Florida.
The piece most residents miss is the day before. The Friday welcome kicks off at Mote Marine Laboratory's Summerland Key facility, where attendees can connect with other ocean enthusiasts and learn about preserving the underwater world. Mote is a five-minute drive up the highway. If you have never toured the coral restoration lab, festival Friday is the easiest way in. Scientists at the Elizabeth Moore International Center for Coral Reef Research and Restoration on Summerland Key are literally growing new coral to replant on damaged reefs throughout the Florida Keys, and the pre-festival event is a chance to see cutting-edge coral restoration work up close.
Put it on the calendar for July 2027 now. It sneaks up.
Where the Night Lands
The two tiki bars at MM 27 look similar on a map and feel nothing alike in person. Choosing between them is the closest thing Ramrod has to a local sport.
Boondocks Grille & Draft House is the family, sports, and mini-golf bar. Beyond the restaurant and bar, Boondocks adds 18 holes of caveman-themed tropical mini golf, plus weekly happenings such as Taco Tuesday, Family Night, Singo, and the Saturday Open Air Market. Happy hour runs Monday through Friday, with BOGO bloody marys and mimosas during the open air market on Saturdays. The property runs daily from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., with mini golf open 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Origin story worth knowing: twenty-five years ago it was a small mom-and-pop ice cream shop, then expanded into sandwiches and beer, and the real transformation began in 2001.
Looe Key Tiki Bar & Grill is the late-night, live-music side. Live entertainment nightly, the longest daily happy hour from 3 to 7 p.m., lunch and dinner specials including a weekday $5 lunch. Weekend hours run later than almost anywhere else on the island: open until 1 a.m. most nights, and 2 a.m. Friday and Saturday. If you want brunch on the water, the bar serves brunch on Saturdays and Sundays between 7:30 a.m. and 2 p.m.

A Small Note for Newcomers
If you bought recently and are still figuring out the island, a few things worth knowing:
- The reef is closer than the grocery store. Ten minutes by boat from most Ramrod canals. That is the trade you made when you moved here.
- Mile Marker 27 is the center of gravity. Directions to your house are almost always given in relation to it.
- The Underwater Music Festival weekend fills every dock and mooring line for miles. Plan around it, or plan to be part of it.
The value of living on Ramrod is not any single one of these places. It is that a Saturday can start on the reef, roll into a backcountry flat, land at brunch on the Tiki deck, detour into 18 holes of mini golf, and end with a live band that plays until 2 a.m., all without leaving the neighborhood. That is a real thing, and it is a rare thing, even in the Keys.
